The Cincinnati Bengals’ struggles to build a Super Bowl-caliber team can largely be traced back to their poor draft decisions over the years. While the Bengals have managed to remain competitive in recent seasons, the Super Bowl appearances of teams like the Los Angeles Rams and the Kansas City Chiefs have exposed just how far behind Cincinnati’s drafting efforts have been, particularly in addressing the crucial areas of their defense.
One of the biggest issues for the Bengals in recent years has been their inability to consistently draft elite defensive players. While they have had some standout selections, such as linebacker Logan Wilson, the overall defensive talent pipeline has been lackluster. The Bengals have often drafted players who have failed to make a significant impact or who have developed at a much slower rate than expected. For example, players like cornerback Darius Phillips and defensive tackle Josh Tupou have shown flashes of promise but haven’t been consistent contributors on a high level.
The Bengals’ struggles are amplified when compared to other Super Bowl contenders. The Rams, for example, made bold moves to acquire proven veterans like Jalen Ramsey and Aaron Donald, while the Chiefs invested in key defensive draft picks and developed them into key pieces. Meanwhile, the Bengals’ reluctance to make similar impactful moves in the draft or free agency left them vulnerable in key moments during high-pressure games, including the Super Bowl loss to the Rams in 2022. Their defense, though competent, wasn’t nearly as dominant or deep as that of their competition.
Furthermore, the Bengals have often prioritized offense, which in theory should be their strength, but this focus on offensive talent has left the defense underdeveloped. Cincinnati has made high-profile investments in players like Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase, both of whom are undoubtedly elite talents, but the lack of a consistently strong defense has hindered their ability to truly compete for championships. The Bengals have failed to supplement their offense with enough defensive stars who can shut down high-powered offenses in critical moments, something that’s vital in championship games.
In short, while Cincinnati has been successful in other aspects of their roster construction, the franchise’s history of poor drafting and lack of investment in defense has hurt their chances of winning a Super Bowl. Until they address these weaknesses and build a more well-rounded team, the Bengals will continue to fall short of their ultimate goal.
