Alex Orji, a former quarterback for the Michigan Wolverines, has officially announced his decision to transfer to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) for the 2025 season. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound quarterback, originally from Sachse, Texas, will have two years of eligibility remaining at UNLV and is expected to be a key addition to the Rebels’ roster.
Orji began his college career at Michigan in 2022, where he played primarily as a backup quarterback. During his two seasons with the Wolverines, he saw action in nine games, rushing for 123 yards and scoring three touchdowns. He also completed one pass for five yards. In 2024, Orji took on a more prominent role, starting three games for Michigan and leading the team to a 2-1 record in those matchups. Over those games, he threw for 150 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions while also contributing 269 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown. Despite these efforts, Orji’s path forward became uncertain after the recruitment of top quarterback prospect Bryce Underwood, leading him to enter the transfer portal in December 2024.
UNLV presents Orji with a fresh opportunity. The Rebels, under new head coach Dan Mullen, have been seeking to improve their program. Mullen, who previously coached at the University of Florida, brings significant experience to the team. He is supported by offensive coordinator Corey Dennis, who has a background in coaching quarterbacks and will play a vital role in developing Orji’s skills. This move to UNLV provides Orji with the chance to compete for the starting job and potentially help the Rebels become a more competitive force in the Mountain West Conference.
Orji’s dual-threat ability—his capacity to both pass and run effectively—will be an asset to UNLV’s offense. His experience in high-pressure games, including appearances in the College Football Playoff National Championship and the ReliaQuest Bowl, will provide much-needed leadership and depth at the quarterback position. As the 2025 season approaches, Orji’s arrival in Las Vegas marks a new chapter in his collegiate career, one where he hopes to showcase his talents and lead UNLV to success.
