Boston College QB Commit Grayson James Flips to Virginia Tech
In a surprising turn of events, quarterback Grayson James has flipped his commitment from Boston College to Virginia Tech. The three-star recruit initially pledged to the Eagles earlier this year but announced on Wednesday that he will instead join the Hokies for the 2025 season.
James, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound dual-threat quarterback from Texas, has been on the radar of several Power Five programs. His decision to decommit from Boston College comes amid a coaching transition in Chestnut Hill, as new head coach Bill O’Brien looks to reshape the program. Virginia Tech, under head coach Brent Pry, has been aggressively recruiting quarterbacks to strengthen its offense, and James appears to be a key part of that plan.
In a statement on social media, James expressed gratitude to Boston College but cited his confidence in Virginia Tech’s direction as a major factor in his decision. “I want to thank Boston College for believing in me, but after much thought and discussion with my family, I have decided to flip my commitment to Virginia Tech. I’m excited for the opportunity to compete and grow in Blacksburg.”
Virginia Tech’s offense has been evolving under offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen, who has emphasized a more dynamic, dual-threat quarterback system. James’ skill set fits well into this scheme, as he has demonstrated the ability to make plays both through the air and on the ground. During his senior season, he threw for over 2,500 yards and 25 touchdowns while adding 600 rushing yards and eight scores.
For Boston College, losing James is a setback, especially as they aim to rebuild under O’Brien. However, the Eagles still have other quarterback targets and will likely pursue additional options through recruiting or the transfer portal.
James’ flip is a significant win for Virginia Tech, adding depth and competition to their quarterback room. With a strong arm, mobility, and leadership skills, he has the potential to make an impact early in his career. Hokies fans will be eager to see how he develops as the team looks to return to ACC contention in the coming seasons.
