Parramatta, NSW – In a significant shake-up to the club’s roster, Parramatta Eels head coach Brad Arthur has officially confirmed the departure of three players ahead of the next NRL season. The announcement was made during a press conference on Sunday afternoon, sending ripples through the club’s fanbase and the wider rugby league community.
The players parting ways with the Eels are veteran forward Ryan Matterson, utility back Waqa Blake, and young prop Ky Rodwell. According to Coach Arthur, the decision was made following extensive discussions with club management and forms part of a broader strategy to restructure the squad and inject fresh talent into key positions.
“These decisions are never easy,” said Arthur. “All three players have given their all for this club. Ryan, Waqa, and Ky have been great professionals and contributed significantly both on and off the field. But as we look ahead, we believe it’s the right time to make changes that align with our long-term goals.”
Ryan Matterson, 29, has been a crucial part of the Eels’ forward pack since joining the team in 2020. Known for his hard-running style and strong defensive work, Matterson made over 70 appearances for the Eels. His experience will be missed, and speculation is already mounting about potential suitors for his signature.
Waqa Blake, who joined the club from the Penrith Panthers in 2019, has had an up-and-down tenure with Parramatta, struggling with injuries and form in recent seasons. Despite this, he remained a popular figure within the squad and among fans for his attacking flair.
Ky Rodwell, a promising young forward, struggled to break into the top 17 consistently and will be seeking greater opportunities elsewhere. The 24-year-old is expected to attract interest from clubs looking to bolster their depth in the forwards.
The Eels are now expected to accelerate their recruitment drive, with several positions open and salary cap space freed up. Arthur hinted that announcements regarding new signings could be made in the coming weeks.
Fans and analysts alike will be closely watching how these departures impact the Eels’ preparations for the 2025 season. While farewells are always emotional, the club appears focused on building a squad capable of returning to premiership contention.
