Here’s everything the Duke coach said during his postgame press conference.
Duke entered senior night in Cameron Indoor Stadium as a five-point favorite but suffered an 84-79 loss to North Carolina, which benefitted from a career-high 31 points from fifth-year senior Cormac Ryan. Blue Devils coach Jon Scheyer apologized to the Cameron Crazies after the buzzer sounded and took responsibility for Saturday’s letdown during his postgame press conference.
“There’s a part of you that feels like you let them down,” Scheyer said after the game. “It was senior night. We probably got caught up in some of that stuff. We didn’t play like we’ve been playing. It hurts. It is disappointing… I just want to thank our students, our fans and everybody. I don’t care where you go; it’s the best environment in college basketball.”
Scheyer went in-depth on what went wrong against the Tar Heels and what his team will take away from the loss as they head into postseason play. He also touched on Jeremy Roach’s postgame comments and potential changes to senior night celebrations, among other things.
“Congrats to North Carolina. It was a disappointing loss for us. It would be one thing if you felt like you could control the things that you could control. I don’t think we quite did that tonight. You have to give them credit for the way they came out. That’s really the story of the whole game for me. They came out and got a 15-point lead. We outscored them the rest of the game.”
