In an emotional interview, Mike Norvell, the former head coach of Florida State University (FSU), revealed his deepest regrets regarding his departure from the program and why he considers it the biggest mistake of his career. Norvell, who left FSU after a turbulent stretch, admits that walking away from the Seminoles was a decision that haunted him ever since.
Norvell, who had been hired in 2020 during a period of uncertainty for FSU, faced immediate challenges, with the program struggling to regain its former glory. Despite the challenges, Norvell helped bring stability to the team by rebuilding the culture and instilling discipline. However, after a few seasons with some ups and downs, Norvell made the difficult choice to step away from his position at Florida State, a decision he now deeply regrets.
“I thought I was doing what was best for my career at the time,” Norvell said, sitting down in an exclusive interview. “But looking back, I realize leaving Florida State was a massive mistake. I left a program I truly believed in, and the support from the fanbase and the team was something I could never replicate elsewhere.”
When asked about the specific reasons behind his departure, Norvell pointed to personal and professional challenges that led him to second-guess his decision. He admitted that the pressure of revitalizing a storied program like FSU weighed heavily on him. At the time, it felt like he needed a fresh start, but the separation from the FSU family created a deep sense of loss.
Despite the regrets, Norvell stressed that he has never lost his love for the program. “The passion and commitment from the players, the alumni, and the fans – that’s something that stayed with me every day after I left,” Norvell continued. “I still feel that sense of purpose, and if I ever get the opportunity, I promise to return to finish what I started.”
Looking ahead, Norvell says he is committed to returning to the college football scene in a leadership role. “I’ve learned a lot from my time away,” Norvell stated. “If anything, it has only made me more determined to return stronger and more prepared to lead a team with the knowledge I didn’t have before.”
As the college football world waits to see if Norvell will indeed return to FSU or another program, one thing is clear: his departure will forever remain a chapter of regret in his coaching career, one that he hopes to rectify in the future. For now, Norvell promises that his journey is far from over, and the Seminoles’ fans can hold out hope for his eventual return.
