In a remarkable act of generosity and community leadership, Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone has announced a $3.6 million personal investment to transform a historic residential property in downtown Denver, Colorado, into a modern shelter and resource center for homeless youth. The initiative, which aims to provide safety, education, and long-term opportunities for young people experiencing homelessness, has been widely praised across the NBA and beyond.

The project, titled “Home Court Haven,” will serve as a 24-hour facility offering accommodation, meals, counseling, mentorship programs, and skill development workshops for at-risk youth aged 13 to 21. The renovation process is expected to begin immediately, with the shelter projected to open its doors in the summer of 2026.

During a heartfelt press conference at Ball Arena, Malone expressed his motivation behind the project:

“Basketball has given me a platform, and it’s my duty to use it for good. Too many young people in our city are struggling without homes, without guidance, and without hope. This shelter will be a place where they can rebuild — not just survive, but grow.”

Malone, known for his fiery competitiveness on the court and deep compassion off it, has long been involved in community service programs throughout Denver. This, however, marks his largest personal investment in a social initiative to date.

The Denver Nuggets organization has also announced plans to support the project through partnerships with local non-profits, construction companies, and volunteer programs involving both staff and players. Nuggets star Nikola Jokić praised his coach’s efforts, stating, “Coach is more than a leader in basketball — he’s a leader in life. What he’s doing will change futures.”

City officials, including Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, have expressed gratitude to Malone for his dedication to the community. “This project embodies the spirit of Denver — compassion, teamwork, and resilience,” the mayor said.

“Home Court Haven” will include dorm-style living areas, recreational spaces, classrooms, and a small indoor basketball court designed to foster teamwork and mentorship.

As Malone concluded, “Every kid deserves a home, a chance, and someone who believes in them. This is my way of saying — we see you, and we care.”
