‘Wonderful’ Premier League defender was in talks with Newcastle, but he will now join Atletico Madrid, according to a report

Caglar Soyuncu’s contract predicament has Newcastle interested in acquiring him from Leicester.

According to 90Min, Liverpool under Jürgen Klopp showed interest in signing the defender on a free transfer.

Yet, the rumor claims that when the Turkish international’s contract expires at the end of the current campaign, he will join Atletico Madrid.

Both the Reds and the Magpies failed to progress their interest and now the centre half looks set for the Spanish capital.

Newcastle and Liverpool showed an interest in signing Caglar Soyuncu

Newcastle have showed an interest in other players from the King Power Stadium since their takeover.

James Maddison is a long-term target, while Youri Tielemans is another player who will be out of contract this summer, but the Belgian is not seemingly as close as Soyuncu to a decision on his future.

The Magpies beat the Foxes en route to the EFL Cup final, where they lost to Manchester United, but Soyuncu was an unused substitute that night.

Soyuncu required some time to get used to English football but Harry Maguire’s departure in 2019 gave him his chance to shine.

But after that, he made a remarkable contribution to the team that twice came close to earning a spot in the Champions League, earning Stuart Pearce’s praise of “amazing.”

Now, he appears to be joining Diego Simeone, who has high expectations for his defenders and will be up against it to lead Atletico back to the Champions League this year.
